How many football fields is 10 miles?

  • Teacher note
Ask students for guesses. Write them up on the board.

Ask students for a guess that's too low? too high?

Once you have the guesses, ask students what information they think would be useful here in solving.

Act Two

  • Teacher note
    Ask your students:

"What information would be helpful here?"

"How are football fields measured and with what unit of measurement?"

Allow your students to decide the total length of a football field.

Act Three

  • VideoCandle Eyes - Act 3
  • Teacher note
    Is this commercial accurate?

Should it be 176 football fields or 146 football fields?

A football field is thought to be 100 yards, but did students account for the two end-zones that are 10 yards each? Therefore, each football field is 120 yards, or 360 feet.

If students used 100 yards per field, they'll get 176 football fields.

If students used 120 yards per field, they'll get 146 football fields.
